So, after a few months of some highly pleasant campervanning around the coastline of Europe and a great Xmas and new year back home, i've finally settled down into some kind of normality again. We've taken on part-time teaching jobs at La Janda and a house down in this little corner of Atlantic-facing Spain. Life is getting into a sunny swing, allowing me time and space to get back into the things i had neglected, namely drawing, painting, designing and blogging.....

I just bought a graphics tablet for an exciting new surf-related design project i'm working on (to be revealed soon i hope) and am enjoying messing around with it. It's never going to be as good as pen and paper but once you get used to it, it's fun and has potential as a medium in its own right. It's also great not to have to scan, photoshop and vectorise every little sketch to get it on screen and tweakable....Here are a few quick and crude 1st steps:

As mentioned a few weeks ago Howies very generously decided to auction off their huge old wooden mini-ramp to raise money Skateistan. Lots of companies and people donated other skatey bits to the auction bundle which included one of my original 'Surf Skate Art Love' Prints.
The result is a very healthy £1800 ($2950) being raised for the Afghan skateboard charity. Good work Howies - a company who consistently put their money where their mouth is.

Wow! it's been ages since i posted- having too much flun and frolics on our Homecoming Tour of the UK to be blogging at the moment....here's a few highlights of the summer so far.....

We've taken the new-old campervan 'Betty Beast' ^ all round the country visiting friends and family and preparing her for our forthcoming trip through France, Spain and Portugal. Despite the rubbish weather, we're falling back in love with England again (but getting out just before we remember all the reasons we left).

Despite the purchase of two beautiful new ^ sticks, surfing has been on the backburner. I did get wet in Sennen the other week and soon learnt a shameful lesson about what a year out of the water does to you while flapping around on the yello-fish in the Bic Zone. The next 4 months of chasing the sun, swells and cider along the coastline of W.Europe should soon that out.

The above ^ picture from an old Stormrider guide has always been in my mind since i first saw it years ago and everytime i look at it i want to pack up and hit the road. It was a good reward to keep in mind during our tough year in Korea. So pleased we'll be at the pictured beach of Zarautz in month or two- hopefully our vehicle wont be so wrecked.

I just got news of the latest offering from Andrew Crockett who brought us the amazing Switch-Foot surfing books. This intriguing new publication 'Acumen -Volume 1' is in a different, if related, direction....I'll leave it for the author to describe:

SURF SKATE ART LOVE II

So, after the setback of schoolboy errors with printing basics, I finally got some good prints out of the 'Surf Skate Art Love' drawing. I've always loved using words in my art and i think the original spark for this particular idea came from fellow blogger Jamie Watson's piece.... and grew from there:

My original plan was to get a load of illustrators and artists from the blogosphere to use the same phrase and create their own interpretation of it in a collection/contest type thing. So far i've just done my own take on it but may revive this idea in the future....

These prints will be on sale soon in a range of colours and a very limited edition.

Schoolboy Error

Ok, so i proudly posted my new linocut here a few days ago...did anyone spot the classic beginner's mistake? Here is the carefully cut lino all inked up and ready to go...

Oh yes! i did the surfing equivalent of waxing the bottom of my board, putting my wetsuit on backwards and paddling outback with the nose 4' in the air and a big grin on my face....Only, i didn't realise till i expectantly peeled back the paper on my first print....

D'oh! the bugger came out in reverse of course.
So, i did a few more prints of my Lightning Bolt cut instead and started work on a new back-words cut with lesson learned and tail between my legs...

Inspired by a hand printed business card by one of the AmaJohn designers (see below), we had a go at making our own little stamps by attacking erasers with scalpels and woodcarving tools. Crude but addictive.

Last week we took a trip to the big city of Busan and found a sweet little art market under the railway bridge.

All the designer/makers were dead friendly and despite the language barrier, emphatic gesturing and smiling garnered a free caricature portrait on top of our purchases of handpainted character pens, a brooch made of an old tie and a poptop purse.

The designers' collective is called Amazon - pronounced Ama-John in Korean which i think accounts for the Lennon-style logo.

So, I had a go at printing up my lino-cut but it wasn't too successful. I tried acrylic paint, watered-down acrylic, calligraphic ink, paint mixed with vegetable oil, weird polystyrene paint and all of the above mixed together.

But...I couldn't seem to get a clear even print that didn't stick to the paper and pull it up....any ideas? I guess proper printing ink is the way but haven't seen any of that here...

Due to the lack of space in this country that is 70% mountainous, most Koreans are crammed into the ranks of huge apartment blocks that dominate every city. Those lucky (i.e. rich) enough to live in a house thus decorate them lavishly and conspicuously.

One happy result of this is the metalwork gates on display as you trundle through the suburbs. Ironically most of them depict idyllic, stylised natural scenes- the exact scenes that are currently being gobbled up for real here (and around the world) in the rush for progress, development and convenience......ho hum- take a look, i really like them, especially the clouds and mountains.

Rhino Cutting?

Korduroy TV has been around for ages now but it's only recently that i had a good trawl through the vids on there.
I was looking for some advice on making a handplane (2 excellent videos on this here ) and stumbled on this other video about hand-printing a greetings card. I've haven't done any lino-cutting and printing since A-Level art so thought I'd give it a go for the first time in 15 years.
We looked around a couple of shops, asking, bizarrely for "Rhino-Cutting" tools - the correct Korean pronunciation -but the message got a little lost in translation. Still, we ended up with a sheet of rubber and some crude woodcarving tools that do the job and didn't get arrested for animal cruelty, which was a bonus.

^^The result is a bit raw and sketchy thanks to the wrong tools (you know what a bad workman always blames) and it being mostly freehand and improvised, not to mention created under the influence of cider, but i'm pretty happy with it. It has a nice textured look and we'll see how it prints up later tonight....

Genuine fears here in Korea as we look out on a grey sky full of radioactive rain from Japan. Some may dismiss it as hysteria but they don't have to walk to work in it......

Time to rethink nuclear power in earthquake zones? or dumping radioactive water straight into the Pacific Ocean?
This whole tsunami/earthquake/nuclear thing has started to make me realise how easily Mother Nature (or 'Gaia' if you prefer) could just shake us parasites off her body like water off a wet dog.......if we don't wipe ourselves out first.

I've been enjoying the daily updates from Tony Plant. A Cornishman who perennially roams his peninsula to capture or create art. I especially like the way he's not precious about it. He doesn't make this work to last forever or to sell, just for the moment of doing it. (He also takes some ace photos)

Check out this beach drawing for example. A series of lines that describe the moving shadows of the nearby rocks. In a few hours it will be washed away, captured only as a photo and in the memories and smiles of bewildered beachcombers.
This reminded me of a couple of well-known 'land artists' who are also worth a look...

^Bristol boy Richard Long who makes art while walking through landscapes all over the world. He paints with mud, creates lines with footsteps and makes illusory stone circles along the way and in the gallery afterwards.

^Andy Goldsworthy. A leaf covered rock 'painting' and a rain shadow.
